    In class: Answer the following prompts:

    1. What might Nick mean when he concludes, "This has been a story of the West after all--"?
    2. What is the meaning of the last paragraph -- actually the very last sentence -- of the book?

    Homework, due Tuesday:

    Write a paper discussing a theme of The Great Gatsby. Choose one of the following, or create one of your own:

    • The American Dream (realized or unrealized)
    • Significance of social status / class
    • The relentless march of time
    • Meaninglessness of life / death of God
    • Reality vs. illusion
    • other?

    When writing, ask yourself these questions:

    • What character is connected to my chosen theme?
    • What is the connection?
    • Where did I read about that?
    • Is this the best example I can think of?

    Papers must be typed, double-spaced, and 1.5 - 2 pages in length. paper must be submitted to turnitin.com (see info. below).
